Abbott and the Department of Defense Team Up For Portable Concussion Test

i-stat_Left_400x533Preliminary tests to find a blood test that can reliably identify possible concussions and traumatic brain injuries have all been very positive, which has led Abbott and the U.S. Department of Defense to form a collaborative effort to develop one such portable test.

The tests will be developed as part of Abbott’s i-STAT Ststem, according to a press release. At the moment, the handheld diagnostic analyzer is used for other point-of-care testing in individuals such as military members.

The collaboration between Abbott and the Department of Defense is an important step in ensuring that military service members, and ultimately civilians, receive proper evaluation,” Beth McQuiston, MD, a board-certified neurologist and medical director of diagnostics for Abbott, said in the press release. “These new tests could open the door to many possibilities for evaluating concussions and helping clinicians optimize care and outcomes.”
