Social Role Recovery Issues Following Traumatic Brain Injury
The ten year period following a traumatic brain injury will involve a return to relationships and family, community living and mobility and work or avocational pursuits. In an ongoing long term Outcome Validation Study conducted by the Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute of Ontario (NRIO) and the Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute at Brookhaven Hospital (NRI) we have been following various aspects of social role return and examining the barriers faced by individuals over the period of time from the end of formal rehabilitation. The study has also allowed us to identify areas for further inquiry which include: long term health problems; psychiatric and substance abuse issues and aging with a disability. We have presented components of the ongoing study at the Missouri Brain Injury Association Conference (2004); The ABI Network Conference (2004); Iowa Brain Injury Association (2005) and we are scheduled for a presentation at the SouthWest Disability Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 29, 2005.
