Rolf B. Gainer, Ph.D., Diplomate ABDA, is the Chief Executive Office at Brookhaven Hospital and the Vice President of Rehabilitation Institutes of America. He is the founder of the Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute of Ontario (Canada). Dr. Gainer has been involved in the design and operation of treatment programs since 1978. He has published numerous articles on mental health and rehabilitation topics and has presented at many national and international conferences. He remains active in outcome research.
Dr. Rolf B. Gainer was invited to serve on the panel of distinguished authors for The Essential Brain Injury Guide, Edition 5.0 released by the Brain Injury Association of America. Dr. Gainer’s chapter on the “Psychosocial Complications of Brain Injury” addresses the psychiatric and neurobehavioral problems which can occur for individuals with brain injuries. The Essential Brain Injury Guide, Edition 5.0, a comprehensive brain injury training manual, is used in the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialist training programs and in other settings.
Mark D. Gage, DO, is the Medical Director for Brookhaven Hospital. He is board certified in psychiatry and is a graduate of Western University of Health Sciences. In addition to his studies in psychiatry, Dr. Gage completed his undergraduate work in psychology at Chapman University. He brings over seventeen years of experience in psychiatry to Brookhaven.
Ron Broughton, M.Ed., LPC, CBIST, is the Chief Clinical Officer at Brookhaven Hospital. He received an M.Ed. from the University of Central Oklahoma. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is also licensed to supervise LPC candidates. He has written several academic papers on schizophrenia and psychosis, and has conducted numerous mental health presentations and workshops. He also served on an expert panel for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health Substance Abuse Services.
Ed Gustavson, MD, is the Medical Director of the Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute at Brookhaven Hospital. Dr. Gustavson is a graduate of Harvard Medical School, Pediatric, Residency and Fellowship programs of U. of MN, and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program of UNC., is board certified in Pediatrics and Neonatology, and is a Fellow of the College of Clinical Pharmacology, Fellow of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, and member of the American College of Rehabilitation Medicine. He was Clinical Director of Children’s Medical Center, Tulsa, until it closed in 2012. Formerly he taught and worked at LSU Medical School in Shreveport, LA, and the University of Minnesota, Mpls, He was a major in the US Army Medical Corps from 1973-75.
Pangaa Buniya, FNP, MSN, is a nurse practitioner with Brookhaven Hospital. She is a board certified family nurse practitioner who graduated from Maryville University. Ms. Buniya has been in the healthcare field for four years, and her experience includes cardiac intensive care and stroke units. She has a passion for working with individuals who are living with CVA, TBI and cardiovascular disease.
Coby D. Nirider, PT, DPT is the Director of NRI at Brookhaven Hospital. Dr. Nirider has over 16 years of experience treating individuals with TBI and Stroke in the post-acute residential and outpatient settings. He received his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 1999 and Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2010. Dr. Nirider is currently an Adjunct Professor in Nova Southeastern University’s Transitional DPT Program. He has several peer-reviewed research publications and has co-authored chapters in rehabilitation texts.
Paul Cochran, MD, is a graduate of University of Oklahoma Medical School and holds board certifications in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Psychiatry. His experience includes founding and operating free clinics, practicing emergency medicine in area hospitals and serving as the Director of EMS Boards for Wagoner and Creek counties.
Debbie Jones, RN, CBIS, is the Director of Nursing at Brookhaven Hospital. Debbie brings over ten years of nursing experience to Brookhaven. She obtained her degree in nursing from Sanford Brown Business College, St. Peters, MO. Debbie is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist.
Darla T., DPh, is the Pharmacist at Brookhaven. She obtained her BS in Pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and has extensive expertise in hospital pharmacology and home infusion.
Brain Injury Case Managers
Nancy Weber, MA, CBIS, is a Brain Injury Case Manager and Clinical Assessor for Brookhaven Hospital. She completed her Masters degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the University of Tulsa. Nancy is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, CBIS. She has prior experience working with adults at various agencies in Oklahoma as a Career Counselor and has specialized in working with at-risk and female offender populations.
Michael Mason is a brain injury case manager as well as an author and journalist. Michael Mason’s book, Head Cases: Stories of Brain Injury and Its Aftermath, is an exploration into the harsh realities endured by brain injury survivors. Since the publication of Head Cases, Mason maintains advocacy work for people with brain injury. He has addressed the Congressional Task Force on Brain Injury and has served as a past president of the Brain Injury Association of Oklahoma. He has also served as a board member of the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists and has participated in two advisory councils committed to the bettering of treatment for veterans with brain injury.
Linda King, MA, CBIS, is the Speech Language Pathologist for Brookhaven Hospital. She received a Bachelors degree and Masters degree from Oklahoma State University holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. Linda brings many years of experience in working with acquired brain injury on several acute and post acute programs in Oklahoma and Texas. She also facilitates the Tulsa Chapter of the Oklahoma Brain Injury Association support groups.
Johnathan Ponds, MSW, CBIS, is a therapist for NRI at Brookhaven Hospital. He completed his undergraduate degree in Social Work from Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He received his Master’s degree in Social Work with a Direct Practice concentration from the University of Oklahoma. Johnathan has experience working with adults in the areas of substance abuse and mental health in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Johnathan is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, CBIS.
Whitney Hicks, CBIS, is a counselor for NRI at Brookhaven Hospital. She has been with Brookhaven Hospital since 2009. Whitney serves as the CARF Coordinator for the NRI, TLC, and CLC programs at the hospital. She received her Bachelors degree from Rogers State University and is completing the requirements for a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Southern Nazarene University. Whitney is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, CBIS.
Doug Graham is a Job Coach and Certified CPI Trainer. He has worked at the Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute at Brookhaven Hospital for over 20 years. Doug received his training at Rogers State University.
Angela Gunn, COTA, is a Certified Occupational Therapist for Brookhaven Hospital. Angela completed the Occupational Therapist Assistant program at Brown Mackie Tulsa in January 2015. She has experience working with patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and has worked with children as well as adults.
Danielle Chronister, OTR/L is a Certified Occupational Therapist for NRI at Brookhaven Hospital, and joined the team in September 2016. She completed her B.S. in Biology from Northeastern State University. She received her M.S. in Occupational Therapy also from Northeastern State University in August 2016. During her internship, she evaluated and treated clients under supervision with complex medical diagnoses and decreased functional ability secondary to trauma (e.g., SCI and TBI), progressive disease (e.g., COPD and Parkinson’s Disease and onset of new conditions (e.g., Stroke and myocardial infarction) in the acute care setting.
Joleen Wilson, RD/LD, CBIS, is a Registered Dietitian at Brookhaven Hospital. She is native of Kansas and received her BS degree in Dietetics at Kansas State University. Joleen completed her Dietetic Internship at Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Hospital in Chicago. She worked at the VA in Indianapolis, Indiana for 2 years and then relocated to the Tulsa area and has worked as a Clinical Dietitian at Hillcrest Hospital, Pediatric Pulmonology Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, and Forest Hills Skilled Nursing Facility. Joleen is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS).
