Word on the condition of Former F1 driver Michael Schumacher has been quiet for the past few months and many were skeptical if the champion racer would ever awake from the medically induced coma he was placed in following a severe brain injury sustained while skiing in the French Alps in December of last year.

But, in this case no news was absolutely good news. Schumacher’s family is largely keeping the details of Schumacher’s recovery private, however a statement released today confirms that Schumacher has come out of the coma and has been transferred from a hospital in Grenoble, France.

The driver’s manager, Sabine Kehm, stated “Michael has left … to consider his long phase of rehabilitation.” The statement also stated that Schumacher’s “further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye,” however it was shortly confirmed that Schumacher had been transferred to Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland.

The family continued to ask for privacy, but they did offer thanks to “all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.” They also expressed gratitude to fans and “all the people who have sent Michael all the good wishes. We are sure it helped him.”

The 45 year old won 91 Formula One races and seven world titles before retiring in 2012.
