A new traumatic brain injury diagnosis tool may be available for widespread use in the near future as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the Defense Automated Neurobehavioral Assessment.

Better known as DANA, the diagnosis tool is a mobile-phone based app created to assist medical providers in identifying traumatic brain injuries in approximately five minutes.

The app runs on numerous platforms and is not much different from the typical smartphone video game, except the onscreen games also measure many factures including speed and accuracy to identify potential signs of TBI when compared with baseline tests.

“In essence, measuring reaction time is like taking the temperature of the brain,” said Corinna Lathan, founder and CEO of AnthroTronix, Inc., the Maryland-based research and development company that created DANA, in an article on army.mil. “It’s a vital part of the data that any health professional needs to evaluate his patient.”

The tool is not quite validated for battlefield use, which will be the next goal for the creators. They also hope to get the tool in the hands of health professional in the near future.
